1. All CNS/NNIN Users must read the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Physics Department, Earth & Planetary Sciences Department Safety Manual as part of the enrollment process. (The only users who are exempted from this requirement are NNIN/C Computational users or external Remote Use only users who will not ever use or physically enter any experimental facilities).

2. All CNS/NNIN Users need to study the information at the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology’s (CCB) safety website at the URL: http://www.chem.harvard.edu/safety/index.php.
3. All CNS/NNIN Users must take the LISE/CNS Safety Training. As of 3/1/08, this training has been incorporated into the enrollment process. All users whose original enrollment pre-dates 3/1/08, have until EOB on 7/1/08 to take this training in order to remain as active CNS/NNIN Users.
Harvard Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) holds this safety training every Tuesday from 11am – 12:30pm in LISE 303.
This training is also held on the first Friday of every month from 11:00am – 12:30pm in LISE 303.
Pre-registration for this training is not strictly required but is recommended in order to guarantee a seat. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis to room capacity. To pre-register for this training, please go to the CNS Training Sign-Up Page.
LISE 303 Is located at the following address:
11 Oxford Street
Laboratory for Integrated Science and Engineering (LISE)
Cambridge, MA 02138
SAFETY REQUIREMENTS 1-3 ON THIS PAGE ARE REQUIRED PRIOR TO ENROLLMENT AND ARE INCORPORATED AS PART OF THE CNS SAFETY/SEI FORM. For more information, please see the URL: http://www.cns.fas.harvard.edu/users/how_to_become_user.php.
4. CNS has a “buddy system” policy. Anyone doing work with hazardous chemicals or materials must have another user or CNS staff member present. This policy is in effect any time day or night. It should be obvious to users what type of work is deemed hazardous, but the general rule is that if you are unsure to err on the side of caution and use the buddy system. If you would like clarification on whether particular work you are planning on performing is considered hazardous, please email us at info cns.fas.harvard.edu
5. There are many CNS facilities that have specialized safety requirements. It is CNS policy that any specific safety requirements for particular CNS tools must be completed prior to training/use of the tool or facility in question. If you are unsure, if a CNS facility or tool you wish to use has any special safety requirements, please contact us at info@cns.fas.harvard.edu.
6. It is CNS policy that users must complete all of the steps required to become a General Nanofabrication Facility User prior to becoming entering the cleanrooms and/or begin training on any CNS tools within cleanroom space. This includes entry for observational only purposes. It is unallowable unless the observer is a properly qualified General Nanofabrication Facility User. Please see the Nanofabrication Facility Use page for all of the steps required to become a qualified cleanroom user.
7. Harvard Users are required to have taken the Harvard EH&S Basic Lab Safety Training in order to use CNS Facilities. Please consult the EH&S website for times and locations of these trainings.
8. It is CNS policy that CNS/NNIN Users will report any unsafe conditions/usage witnessed to a member of the CNS technical staff or Admin. Office immediately. |
