Because many of the Nanofabrication Facility tools are located in the cleanrooms, there are additional safety and protocol concerns that CNS needs to make certain users are aware of before we can allow usage of this facility and it’s tools.
CNS divides Nanofabrication Facility users into two groups; General and Specific. One must first become a General Nanofabrication Facility User in order to have any access to the cleanrooms. Once the steps to become a General User have been met, a researcher can use any Nanofabrication Facility tools that do not require additional training and qualification. Once a General User, researchers can begin arranging times with CNS NF Staff to train on Nanofab. tools that do require additional training. One must be a General User, prior to receiving training on a specific tool.
Please follow the steps below in order to become a General Nanofabrication Facility User.
Please note that Steps 1-7 can be taken out of sequence.
General Nanofabrication Facility (NF) User Qualification Procedure
1. Enroll as a CNS/NNIN User
Harvard’s Center for Nanoscale Systems (CNS) is a node in the National Science Foundation funded National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network (NNIN). It is required that all users of any Nanofabrication Facility (NF) tool first be enrolled in the CNS/NNIN User Program before any training or use of the NF facility.
To enroll, please go to: How do I become a CNS/NNIN User? or email: nninapply@cns.fas.harvard.edu
2. Attend LISE/CNS Safety Training
Harvard Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) holds this safety training every Tuesday from 11am – 12:30pm in LISE 303.
This training is also held on the first Friday of every month from 11:00am – 12:30pm in LISE 303.
THIS TRAINING IS REQUIRED EVEN IF YOU ONLY PLAN TO EVER USE THE McKAY CLEANROOMS.
As of March 1st, 2008, this training is incorporated into the enrollment process. Step 1 cannot be completed until this training has been taken.
Pre-registration for this training is not required. However, seating is on a first-come, first-served basis to room capacity.
3. Re-read the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences/Physics/Earth and Planetary Sciences Department Safety Manual if it has been over six months since the last time you read it.
CNS requires that all Nanofabrication Facility users have read and are familiar with this document. The safety manual can be found at the URL:
www-safety.deas.harvard.edu/manual.html.
If you have read the safety manual within the last six months (you were required to do so at the time of your original enrollment), then proceed directly to Step 5.
4. Complete the online Cleanroom User Protocol (CUP) training
This training consist of a series of slides (PDF document) that instructs prospective users in basic rules of use of the Nanofabrication Facility.
5. Take and pass the online CUP Quiz
The CUP quiz is a web-based quiz on the Cleanroom User Protocol (CUP). In order to take this quiz you will need to click here.
6. Read the Protocol for User Supplied Chemicals in the Cleanrooms
CNS requires that all Nanofabrication Users follow this protocol when they bring chemicals into the cleanrooms.
7. Complete Cleanrooms Orientation.
Please contact one of the CNS Nanofabrication Facility staff members listed below to schedule a brief cleanroom orientation. Please print out and bring a copy of the Cleanroom Orientation Form to your scheduled orientation session.
USERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR PRINTING OUT AND BRINGING THIS FORM TO THE ORIENTATION. Upon completion, the CNS NF staff member will sign the last page of the form. You will also need to sign it as well. Once signed, the form needs to be turned into the CNS Admin. Office (LISE 306) in person or by fax 617-384-7302.
Nanofabrication Facility Staff available for conducting the Cleanrooms Orientation:
Ed Macomber, 617-384-5227, eddiemac cns.fas.harvard.edu
John Tsakirgis, 617-384-9651, jtsakirg cns.fas.harvard.edu
Please make sure to print out and bring the Cleanroom Orientation Form to your orientation session.
8. For internal users, your HUID will be automatically activated within 48 hours upon completion of steps 1-7 for both McKay Labs cleanroom facilities. External users will have to contact the CNS Administrative Office at nninapply@cns.fas.harvard.edu in order to get a generic access card.
Upon completing step 8, you are considered a McKay Cleanroom General Nanofabrication Facility User. This status entitles you to use any cleanroom or back-end tools in either McKay Labs Cleanroom that does not require additional, tool specific training and qualification. See below for the steps required to become a Specific Nanofabrication Facility tool user.
See Below for additional information on becoming a qualified user of the new LISE cleanroom.
PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU CAN BE A MCKAY CLEANROOM USER WITHOUT BEING A LISE CLEANROOM USER BUT NOT VICE-VERSA. IF YOU ONLY WISH TO USE THE MCKAY CLEANROOMS, YOU CAN SKIP STEP 9.
9. Upon completion of steps 1-8, you need to go to the CNS Admin. Office to get set-up in the iris reader system that is used to access the LISE cleanroom.
CNS has a LISE Iris Reader System Form on the Forms page of the User Info section of this web site. The Admin Office also has copies of this form available.
If you want to learn more about the Iris Reader technology, you can visit the LG Iris website.
Once steps 1-8 are completed, you will be considered both a McKay and LISE General Nanofabrication Facility User. Please see below additional information on how to become trained on specific tools within the cleanrooms.
10. LISE Wet Bench Training
Please note that if any of the work you will do in the LISE cleanroom will involve use of the wet benches, there is a special LISE wet bench training/qualification required. Users must pre-register for this training and can do so at the CNS Special Training Sign-up Page. You must already be a LISE cleanroom user (completed steps 1-9) in order to take this training. Please note that if your work in the LISE cleanroom will not involve the wet benches, you do not need to take this training.
